New Caledonia has a reputation as an expensive destination, and prices are high by Pacific standards. But with some planning it's very doable.
Accommodation
- Book apartments with kitchens in Nouméa and self-cater from supermarkets and the market.
- Stay in tribal gîtes and campsites on the islands and in the bush: simple, friendly and good value.
- Travel in shoulder season (September–November, April–May) for lower rates.
Food
- Fill up at lunchtime 'plat du jour' menus, usually cheaper than dinner.
- Try snack bars and roulottes (food trucks) for nems, sandwiches and grilled fish.
- Tap water in Nouméa is generally safe to drink, so carry a refillable bottle.
Getting around
- Use Nouméa's Tanéo bus network rather than taxis.
- Share a hire car with friends for road trips; compare prices on car hire.
- Take the ferry rather than flying to the Isle of Pines when sea conditions are good.
Free and cheap things to do
- Walk the bays from Anse Vata to Baie des Citrons.
- Hike Ouen Toro hill for views over the lagoon.
- Swim, snorkel and picnic: the lagoon is free.
Use an eSIM for data instead of roaming, and pay in local currency (XPF) when your card offers a choice.
