Domestic flights

Air Calédonie flies to the Isle of Pines (about 25 minutes) and the Loyalty Islands (about 40 minutes). Since 2026 these flights depart from La Tontouta International Airport rather than Magenta in Nouméa, which makes same-day connections with international flights easier. Services to the Loyalty Islands have been irregular; confirm schedules close to travel and allow a buffer day.

Ferries

A high-speed ferry has served the Isle of Pines (about 2.5 hours) and the Loyalty Islands from Nouméa. Seas can be rough, and timetables change; check the current operator schedule locally before planning around it.

Car hire

A car is the best way to explore Grande Terre. Drive on the right; an English-language or international licence is usually accepted for short stays. Compare car hire options.

Buses

In Greater Nouméa, the Tanéo network links the bays, the centre and the suburbs. Intercity buses serve towns on Grande Terre but are infrequent.

Taxis and water taxis

Taxis are metered but expensive; book by phone or at ranks. Water taxis from Anse Vata serve Îlot Canard and Îlot Maître.
