Beyond Koumac, the north of Grande Terre narrows to a finger of land between two lagoons. It is a long drive from Nouméa (about 5 to 6 hours to Koumac) but rewards you with empty beaches and a true sense of remoteness.
Highlights
- Koumac, the regional hub, with nearby limestone caves to explore.
- Poum and the beaches around Malabou and Nennon, with wild horses roaming the headlands.
- Boat Pass at the northern tip, where the two lagoons meet.
- Boat trips to the reef and, for the adventurous, the remote Belep islands.
Plan fuel and supplies carefully and book accommodation in advance, as options are few.
