Grande Terre is made for road trips, and public transport outside Nouméa is limited, so a hire car gives you real freedom.

Driving rules
- Drive on the right; French road rules apply.
- Speed limits are typically 110 km/h on expressways, 90 km/h on open roads and 50 km/h in towns, unless signed otherwise.
- Seat belts are compulsory; drink-driving laws are strict.
- Most short-stay visitors can drive on their home licence; carry an international driving permit if your licence isn't in French or English.
Road conditions
Main roads are generally good. Mountain crossings are narrow and winding, and some tracks in the south and north are unsealed; check if your rental allows them. Avoid driving at night on rural roads because of animals and pedestrians.
Fuel
Stations thin out north of Koné and on the East Coast, and many close on Sundays. Fill up when you can.
