Do I need a visa for New Caledonia?

New Caledonia is a French territory with its own entry rules; it is not part of the Schengen area. EU citizens need no visa, and nationals of countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, Canada and Japan can usually visit visa-free for short stays. Always check the current rules with a French embassy or consulate before travelling.

Is New Caledonia part of France?

Yes. New Caledonia is a French overseas collectivity with a special status and a high degree of autonomy. Its political future has been the subject of several referendums and ongoing negotiations.

Is it safe to visit in 2026?
