Pédé beach on Maré

Maré

Rugged, green and refreshingly untouristy, Maré rewards travellers who like to slow down.

Maré (Nengone) is the southernmost of the Loyalty Islands. It is a raised coral island with high cliffs, thick forest and only a handful of places to stay, which is exactly its appeal.

What to see

  • Pédé and Yejele beaches, long white strands where you are likely to have the sand to yourself.
  • The natural aquarium, a seawater pool connected to the ocean where fish and sometimes turtles drift in with the tide.
  • Trou de Bone, a deep sinkhole in the forest, and the legend-rich Warrior's Leap (Saut du Guerrier).
  • The Shabadran cliffs, reached on a guided walk across customary land.

Good to know

Bring cash, as card payment and ATMs are limited outside Tadine. Many sites are on customary land and need a local guide; your accommodation can arrange this, and a small customary gift (a coutume) may be expected when visiting a tribe.
