Opened in 1998 and named after the Kanak independence leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou, the centre is New Caledonia's most celebrated building. Architect Renzo Piano designed its tall, curved timber 'cases' to echo traditional Kanak great huts, letting the trade winds whistle through them.
What you'll see
- Exhibitions of contemporary and traditional Kanak and Pacific art.
- The Kanak path, a garden trail telling the story of the first ancestor through plants.
- Three traditional huts representing different regions, built by Kanak craftsmen.
- Performances and festivals on the outdoor stage.
Tips
Allow two to three hours. The centre is about 10 km from Anse Vata; go by taxi, car or a guided city tour. Opening days and exhibitions change, so check the centre's current programme before you go.
