East of Grande Terre, the three Loyalty Islands are raised coral islands with powder beaches, caves and strong Kanak traditions.
Which island?
- Lifou: the biggest and best equipped, with cliffs, Jinek Bay snorkelling and vanilla.
- Ouvéa: the 25 km beach and the jaw-dropping lagoon.
- Maré: the wildest, with forests, sinkholes and empty beaches.
Getting there in 2026
Air Calédonie flights now leave from La Tontouta, taking about 40 minutes. Services have been irregular since 2024, so confirm schedules close to travel. Ferry services have also operated between Nouméa and the Loyalty Islands; check current timetables locally.
Custom and etiquette
The islands are customary land. Dress modestly away from the beach, ask before photographing, and when visiting a chiefdom, a small gift (traditionally fabric and a modest sum) is offered as a coutume. Your host will guide you.
