The Kanak are New Caledonia's Indigenous Melanesian people, about 40% of the population, with more than 25 languages and a social life organised around clans and chiefdoms.

Key ideas

  • The great hut (grande case): the tall, conical hut is the symbolic heart of a chiefdom.
  • The coutume: a customary exchange of gifts and words that opens any formal visit.
  • Customary land: much of the islands and parts of Grande Terre are held collectively by clans. Access often requires permission.
  • Bougna: the signature feast dish, cooked in banana leaves in an earth oven. See our food guide.

Where to learn more

Start at the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Nouméa, then stay in a tribal gîte on the islands or the East Coast.
