About 24 km off Nouméa, the slender white Amédée Lighthouse rises 56 m above a tiny islet near the Boulari Pass. It was prefabricated in iron in France, shipped out in pieces and first lit in 1865, and it still guides ships through the reef.

A day on the islet

  • Climb the spiral staircase of around 247 steps for a sweeping view of the lagoon.
  • Snorkel straight off the beach; turtles and colourful fish are common.
  • Spot the striped tricot rayé sea kraits that rest on the islet. They are shy and not aggressive, but never touch them.
  • Most day cruises include lunch, a glass-bottom boat ride and a Polynesian show.

Getting there

Day cruises leave Port Moselle in Nouméa in the morning and return late afternoon; the crossing takes about 45 minutes.
